The two-day School of Tomorrow: Empowering Lifelong LearnersConference came to a close in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and delegates and speakers headed home on November 22, 2012 after a series of highly productive workshops, groundbreaker sessions and plenaries.
The international conference, the first of its kind to be organised abroad by a Pakistani educational institution, was a stimulating and enlightening experience for all who attended, shedding light on the complex issues that face the educators of today when educating children for tomorrow.
Renowned educationists, experts and scholars participated in the conference, among them inspirational speaker and author of Creating Tomorrow’s Schools Today Richard Gerver, Beaconhouse CEO Kasim Kasuri, Alma Harris, Diana Laufenberg, Pamela Mundy, Zachary Chase, Gigi Schweikert, Ayesha Kasuri and Mary Louise Holly. Richard Gerver delivered the keynote speech, stressing that educationists need to focus on what really matters - our children, their potential and the challenges they face in an increasingly changing world.
"We as educationists are instrumental in providing learning that is meaningful for children in order for them to be resilient, self-confident, creative, entrepreneurial, curious, flexible and collaborative," said Gerver. "Most of all, I want people to capture what makes Beaconhouse so special and explore ways to further that commitment."
The theme of the conference, ‘Empowering Lifelong Learners’, is particularly important at this time because the Malaysian government has recognised the significance of lifelong learning in meeting the challenges of a knowledge and skills-based economy and is adopting a policy that will encourage and eventually ensure that a culture of learning is embedded in the daily lives of the people.
YB Dato Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, Malaysia’s Minister of Information, Communication and Culture, also addressed the delegates and speakers on the final day of the conference. “With education, we change the future, propel progress, and gain values,” he said. “We are here to reassess conventional beliefs of what constitutes progressive learning while helping to change the learning experiences of children studying in schools at every level. This will certainly help to propel human civilisation,” he added.
Kasim Kasuri, the CEO of Beaconhouse, concluded the ‘Setting Directions’ session with the argument that there needs to be an immediate paradigm shift in the methods of education on a global level. “We need to create an environment where students take ownership of their own learning and where teachers play the role of facilitators. We want to challenge and shake up the current mindset in education, even amongst the experts and educationists, the scholars and the professors, and change the way we do things. Our ultimate aim is to pave the way to creating empowered lifelong learners who will form a better workforce for the future,” he said.

Mr Ali Raza is being promoted to Project Director of The Educators, Pakistan’s largest educational network with a student body exceeding 120,000 and 338 branches. He joined Beaconhouse in 2006 as Regional Director of the Beaconhouse Central Region, guiding it through a steady consolidation in some of the nation`s toughest cities. He worked closely with the Chairperson in the establishment of Beaconhouse-Newlands, thus contributing to our most successful school launch ever, and has willingly extended his valuable support to other areas, notably TNS Beaconhouse, the revamp of our sports programme and special projects involving construction which benefited from his engineering background.

Mr Ali Ahmed Khan is taking over as Regional Director. Mr Ali Khan joined recently as head of Premier DLC and it was always envisaged that he would move over to another senior position once PDLC had started up. He has previously worked for 18 years both domestically and overseas in functions ranging from operations, marketing, and customer care to franchising and business strategy. In his various assignments, he has developed and launched new products and also led the establishment of a telecom company in Africa.
Mr Noor ud Din Ahmed, the founding Project Director of The Educators and Director Development for Beaconhouse, is relinquishing his role at The Educators and will now concentrate his energies on the development of Premier Trading, which has grown tremendously over the years under his leadership and will continue to launch new products and services, and on his construction role. The driving force behind The Educators since its establishment in 2002, Mr Ahmed can safely claim credit for having introduced the concept of school franchising to Pakistan.
All the above changes are effective immediately and will be practically implemented by 21 September.

Two significant new appointments have been made to meet the dynamic operational goals of Beaconhouse. Mr Danial Kasuri, who has been at the helm of the Northern Region in Pakistan for the greater part of the last decade, will be relocating to Dubai to take charge of the Beaconhouse Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region. He will be succeeded in Islamabad by Mr Nassir Kasuri.
During his tenure, Mr Danial Kasuri has led the Northern Region and a dedicated team to excellence in every domain - from business development and growth statistics to academics; student, staff and parental engagement, and extracurricular initiatives. He will play an equally pivotal role in the development and expansion of the Beaconhouse MENA region.
Mr Nassir Kasuri will take over as Regional Director, BSS Northern Region, Pakistan. Prior to this appointment, his involvement with the Beaconhouse IT Department over many years has seen him mastermind the organisation’s rapid advancements towards complete automation. He has also served as Project Director of The Educators for a couple of years and headed an ambitious project in the energy sector which was successfully sold to a public sector organisation some years ago.
These appointments will bring a wealth of experience and a fresh synergy to two key regions. The transition is due to be implemented between mid-September and mid-October as it involves a parallel run of approximately one month.

TNS Beaconhouse has been officially authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme, becoming the first `IB World School` in Lahore and only the second in Pakistan. In due course, TNS will also offer the IB Diploma (equivalent to A Levels). The IB Middle Years Programme is a natural progression for the project-based learning practiced at TNS. It provides a framework of academic challenge for students aged 11 to 16 that encourages them to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and guides them towards becoming international-minded critical and reflective thinkers.

Gymboree Play & Music launched its second centre in Pakistan with an Early Childhood Festival 2012. It featured free previews of Gymboree classes along with free seminars for parents on Child Nutrition Needs, Special Learning Needs, Nurturing Creativity, Confidence and Friendship in Young Children, and others.
Hundreds of families attended the festival throughout the day. Sophia K. Kasuri, Director of Gymboree Pakistan, said the second centre in Lahore was in response to the countless queries from parents following the opening of the first centre a year ago and more people could now benefit from the same level of excellence that had become the hallmark of Gymboree all over the world. With over 700 centres in 37 countries, Gymboree is the world leader in early childhood development. Their programmes are also recognised for their unique approach to parent involvement - which encourages participation in and understanding of each child`s development.
Beaconhouse is the only authorised franchise of Gymboree programmes in Pakistan and plans to open centres nationwide. Its first centre outside Lahore is expected later this year.

For the second year running the Beaconhouse School System hosted "Little Leaders", an event focusing on the role parents can play in their child’s social and intellectual growth. On the last Sunday in January eighteen Beaconhouse schools across the country opened their doors to parents of children aged 3 to 8 for a full day of free interactive workshops and activities.
The programme of fully interactive workshops was based on the latest research in education and child development and included hands-on activities and question-and-answer sessions. The topics included `How to Raise a Leader; ‘Parenting for Today: Raising Tomorrow’s Leaders’; ‘How to Raise a Reader’; ‘How your Child can love Maths’; ‘How your Child can learn through Play’, and ‘How to use Technology with your Child’. Each was designed to provide simple strategies to instil a sense of leadership and responsibility in the young, as well as helping them to develop core skills in a world that has become increasingly competitive.
In particular, the event highlighted ways in which to promote a lifelong appreciation and love for books. Parents were also guided on tips and techniques to practise with their young ones to make them appreciate the fun and magic of mathematics and technology and how they could be applied in virtually every sphere of life.
While parents were busy in the workshops, the children were kept fully occupied in a range of activities included storytelling, sports, art and craft, pottery, puppetry, jumping castle and games.
